| A very scenic but remote route thru the mountains |
May 19-26 2025 Los Alamos, NM
On Monday May 19 we traveled from Las Vegas New Mexico to Los Alamos NM. We chose a route that took us on a large counter clockwise loop through the mountains and entered Los Alamos from the north.
What an amazing ride that was, the whole journey put us in the most picturesque landscape of mountains and valleys. Our highest mountain pass was over 9000 feet in elevation. It truly was beautiful. Sorry, I didn’t take any pictures, it was two hands on the wheel route.
We are now in Los Alamos at Millie’s daughters’ home which borders the Los Alamos National Forest. Millie took some pictures of me maneuvering the RV into it’s parking spot. Note the front mounted hitch I use to get it in place. The pic through the window is my morning view of the national forest.

I have just finished reading a book about biking the Camino De Santiago and am now reading about hiking the Appalachian Trail. In both these stories the participants occasionally took what is called a Zero Day to rest, recuperate, restock and connect with family or friends. That’s pretty much what Millie and I are doing. We have been having a Zero Week at “Kamp Kolman”,
Our campsite is Dave and Rae Anne’s driveway. I can’t help but laugh about the difference between here and our neighborhood in South Carolina. The Myrtle Beach community has a Facebook page and more often than not the postings are petty grievances about some minor infraction of community rules. Or another popular posting is neighbors complaining about some infraction to a rule they just made up or heard about on someone else's posting, neither party making any effort to authenticate the supposed rule. Here in New Mexico, we are camped in a community of Million dollar plus homes and they are cool with us being here. Besides RVs, they are also very accepting of motorcycles, utv’s, boats, and utility trailers, all parked in plain sight. None of those would be allowed to cast a shadow on our street.
Yes, we would be welcomed in the big house, but the RV is our home on the road, all our stuff is in it. The families socialize every day in the house or the RV. Plus we don’t wear out our welcome this way.
We haven’t done anything special; besides sharing meals with family. We had laundry to do and the RV needed washing, just no tourist stuff. Dave and Rae Anne both work full time jobs and I encourage them to give me projects to work on while we are here. This hopefully helps them out and well,….work has been my life for a long time.

A few of my projects included repairing a leak under a cabinet in the laundry room, repairing the damaged bottom of said cabinet, and repairing several wooden dining room chairs.

Millie and I took a trip to Espanola on Wednesday where we browsed in a couple thrift stores and had a nice lunch at a restaurant called Jo Ann’s. and on Thursday Millie and Rae Anne went shopping in Santa Fe.
I saw a big brown bear lumbering down the trail on the other side of the arroyo. That the first time I have seen one this close to the house.
We’ll be back on the road in a couple days and we have some interesting (to us anyhow) destinations coming up.
