Memorial Day
May 26 2025 Memorial Day
Millie and I attended the Memorial Day Celebration at the Guaje Pines Cemetery here in Los Alamos New Mexico today. Celebration seems like an odd title for a service to honor fallen Service personnel, but that’s not my writing, that’s what they call it. I’m not trying to distract for the service, it was respectful and is always emotionally moving for me, as I know some of those lost souls who gave their all so we could live free in this great country.
Many service fraternity’s work together to organize the event. From the tiniest scouts to the high school ROTC cadets, there is much participation by the young. The little ones hand out bottled water, and tiny flags and the older kids handle the honor guard duties and the 21-gun salute. The VFW, the Elks, the American Legion, the fire department and even an elderly member of the daughters of the American Revolution were all represented as was the clergy and local politicians.
This was our third time attending the Los Alamos memorial and as I sat there today, I wondered why there is so much participation in such a small community. Los Alamos has more PHD’s per capita than anywhere else, it’s a huge brain trust, I wouldn’t think that many of them served in the military.
I'm going to make an assumption, with a town legacy going back to the first atomic bomb and continuing to this day doing all sorts of sensitive and secret research they must take the defense of our country seriously. They are doing their part for our republic and must feel a kinship to the military and hold the deepest respect for those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.
Our fallen patriots deserve our respect, I hope you all took a moment to think of them.
